Sikkim Vigilance Police Arrests Head Assistant of Tourism Department Over Conspiracy & Misappropriation of Government Funds

In continuation of its anti-corruption drive against corrupt public servants, the Sikkim Vigilance Police (SVP) arrested a Head Assistant of the Tourism Department on Tuesday, 11th August 2026, on charges of conspiracy and receipt of funds in her bank account from amounts fraudulently and dishonestly withdrawn from Government accounts.
The misappropriated funds were traced to the accounts of the Gangtok District Zilla Panchayat (GDZP) and the Jal Jeewan Mission Security Deposit. A search was conducted at the residence of the accused, and incriminating materials relevant to the investigation were seized. The accused is being held in custody for further interrogation.
FIR Registered on Complaint from GDZP
Acting on a written complaint received from the Sachiva, GDZP, an FIR was registered at the SVP Police Station against the accused public servants, charging them with conspiracy, cheating, and forgery. It is alleged that during 2018–25, the accused officials, who were responsible for preparing the monthly salary bills of GDZP staff, dishonestly, wilfully, and illegally inflated their own salary bills on a regular basis and forwarded a false and fabricated list of payees to the bank for the disbursement of monthly salaries. The inflated salary amounts were credited to the respective bank accounts of three accused public servants.
Two Accountants and a Senior Accountant-cum-DDO Arrested Earlier
Earlier, SVP had arrested two accountants and one Senior Accountant-cum-Drawing & Disbursing Officer of GDZP on the same charges. The accused public servants continued to draw inflated salaries with apparent impunity, causing deliberate and undue pecuniary loss to the Government exchequer running into crores. They are also alleged to have siphoned off huge funds, running into crores, from various other official accounts of GDZP.
